What is Chamomile Flower Extract?

Chamomile Extract is derived from Chamomile Flowers by steam distillation. It originates from Western Europe and Northern Africa.

Chamomile Extract contains over 20 chemical compounds, which may help in various skin and health conditions. So let's dive right in and see what this super flower can do for you.

Wound Healing

A 2009 Study revealed that chamomile extract was more effective than corticosteroids in healing wounds. Another study was done on 14 patients who underwent dermabrasion of tattoos. Chamomile extract was used and produced wound drying and speeding of wound closures.

Inflammation

Chamomile contains an anti-oxidant, apigenin, which aids in lowering inflammation. It reduces the release of inflammation-causing chemicals. This can be helpful with sunburns and rashes, as well as skin inflammation.

Soothing Sensitive Skin

Along with apigenin, chamomile also has bisoprolol and chamazulene, all of which give chamomile its soothing and healing benefits. A 2010 study found that applying German Chamomile Oil to the skin of rats effectively lowered allergy markers.

Acne

A 2010 Study was done on several essential oils and its effect on acne. Chamomile extract showed to be somewhat effective for its antibacterial activities towards Propionibacterium Acnes, the skin-dwelling organism that is involved in causing acne. Cinnamon, Thyme and Rose essential oils were the most effective. Next effective were oils such as Grapefruit, Lemon, Lavender, and Chamomile.

Anti-Aging

Free radicals form when atoms are exposed to things like UV rays, pollution, smoke, and other chemicals in the air. They are missing an electron and are desperately seeking a replacement to join up with. When they come in contact with unprotected skin, they steal an electron from our skin. Free radicals are the number one cause of wrinkles. But also, the natural process of aging simply causes our skin cells to divide more slowly, and we lose collagen.

Well, chamomile again to the rescue. It's high levels of anti-oxidants fight oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Chamomile contains high amounts of polyphenols and phytochemicals, and when applied to the skin, helps protect the skin from free radical damage.
