How To Get Healthy Winter Skin

As we head deeper into the winter months, it's crucial to understand how your skin behaves when environmental factors change around you, and what to do in order to keep your skin moisturized and supple.

The cold numbing air can leave your skin feeling raw, while being indoors with your heater blasting may cause dry, itchy skin. It seems like there is no escape. Even the little pleasures in the winter like cuddling in front of a crackling fire, or taking a much needed hot bath or shower sounds great, however, both can further cause moisture loss leading to dry skin.

But we're going to share our best kept secrets on keeping your skin moisturized and supple throughout the winter months.

1. Use a humidifier
Using a humidifier during the winter months will add moisture to the air, which will help keep your skin hydrated. 

2. Keep the hot showers short
According to Baylor College of Medicine, hot showers and baths can lead to excessive dry skin. Hot steam causes pores to open up, stripping your skin of their natural oils. If this is a difficult one to muster up, be sure to use an all-natural, facial oil immediately after a shower as well as a body oil. Oil-based skincare products have zero water and are full of skin nourishing botanical oils. Be sure to read the ingredients to ensure everything is all-natural and synthetic-free.

3. Avoid alcohol-based products
We know during the pandemic, hand sanitizer usage is high and they're all alcohol-based products. However, if we can avoid alcohol on the face directly, this can tremendously help with dry facial skin. Any product that contains alcohol is naturally very drying with the exception of cane sugar alcohol, like our hand cleansing spray.

4. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water. The recommended amount of water to drink per day is no longer 8 cups. According to Mayo Clinic, you should drink anywhere between 11.5 to 15.5 cups per day.

5. Modify your skincare routine for the winter months
Opt for a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, followed by a hydrating facial oil, for example. You'll know you need to modify your skincare routine if you apply your go-to products and you feel that stinging sensation. It means your skin is red and inflamed, and these products are not doing the job.
